birdwatching
we found the yellow warbler perched on your car
window later in our little book of birds,
just like when we ventured out into the backwoods
behind the stadium and the kingfisher puckered
its water-woven wings, diamonds jingling
off its back.
i did watch birds before and after you.
the difference between now and then
is that then i would observe the hummingbird
sucking nectar from the jasmine alone
and wonder.
the difference between now and then
is that now you help me spot the nest
with eggs small as thimbles, bursting
with cotton like a cloud or a crib.
